The compliance date for upgrading to Version 5010 standards for electronic health transactions was January 1, 2012.
2. The transition to ICD-10 for medical diagnosis and inpatient procedure coding occurs on October 1, 2013. Version 5010 Enforcement Discretionary Period CMS announced that it would not initiate enforcement action with respect to any HIPAA covered entity non-compliant with the ASC X12 Version 5010 (Version 5010), NCPDP Telecom D.0 (NCPDP D.0) and NCPDP Medicaid Subrogation 3.0 (NCPDP 3.0) standards for 90 days following the compliance date. Prepare now to Ensure a Smooth Transition—Don't Wait! Preparing for Version 5010 and ICD-10, will take time. Preparation will include potential updated software installation, staff training, changes to business operations and workflows, internal and external testing, reprinting of manuals and other materials. Version 5010 and ICD-10 require system and business changes throughout the health care industry. ICD-10 will affect coding for everyone covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), not just those who submit Medicare claims.
