Updating and Editing Data on Physician Compare

The following are topics of interest based on questions CMS has received from physicians and other healthcare professionals about Physician Compare. CMS will update this list as new inquiries are received.

How do I update or correct the information that displays on Physician Compare?

  • Address information (including issues with suite numbers, practice locations, etc., education, phone number, Medicare Assignment status: 

This information comes from the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS). You can edit or correct this information via Internet-based PECOS.

  • Training/residency, hospital affiliation, foreign language:

To update or correct any of these fields, please e-mail Physician Compare and provide the correct information along with your name, specialty, the address(es) of your practice locations, your NPI number, and the best method to contact you.

How long does it take for updates in PECOS to be reflected on the Physician Compare Website?

It can take up to two to four months for information updated in PECOS to be reflected on Physician Compare due to lags in data processing time. We do appreciate your patience in this matter as we work to reduce the time it takes for edits to be reflected on the website.

I am not listed on Physician Compare. How do I fix this?

In order to be displayed on Physician Compare, you must be in an “active” status in the Provider, Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS), have a specialty listed, and have at least one practice address listed. If your PECOS information is up-to-date but you are still not on the site, please e-mail Physician Compare and send your name, specialty, the address(es) of your practice locations, your NPI number, and the best method to contact you, and we will investigate the issue further.

Our group practice is not listed on Physician Compare. Why and how do we fix this?

The information on Physician Compare comes from the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS). Please verify that your group practice and all members of your group practice have up to date PECOS information via Internet-based PECOS. If your PECOS information is up-to-date but you are still not on the site, please e-mail Physician Compare and send us the official name of your group practice, the NPI numbers for the professionals who should be associated with your group, and the State in which they are licensed to practice, and we will investigate the issue further.

Members of our group practice are not listed on Physician Compare. How do we correct this information?

Group practice affiliation as displayed on Physician Compare is determined by how a physician or other healthcare professional has assigned their benefits. The information on Physician Compare comes from the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS). Please verify that your group practice and all members of your group practice have up-to-date PECOS information via Internet-based PECOS. If PECOS information is up-to-date but the group members are still not on the site, please e-mail Physician Compare and send us the official name of your group practice, the NPI numbers for the professionals who should be associated with your group, and the State in which they are licensed to practice, and we will investigate the issue further.

A physician that does not work for us is being displayed as part of our group practice. How do we correct this information?

If a physician or other healthcare professional is being listed as part of your group practice it is because they have reassigned their benefits to the group’s Tax Identification Number (TIN). The information on Physician Compare comes from the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS). You can terminate the reassignment of benefits from your group practice through PECOS. Please verify that your group practice and all members of your group practice have up-to-date PECOS information via Internet-based PECOS.

I am listed as part of a group practice that I am no longer affiliated with. How do I update this information?

Group practice affiliation as displayed on Physician Compare is determined by how a physician or other healthcare professional has assigned their benefits. The information on Physician Compare comes from the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS). You can terminate the reassignment of benefits from this group practice through PECOS. Please verify that your PECOS data are up-to-date via Internet-based PECOS.
