Gateways
In order to securely exchange electronic private health information, robust ‘Gateways’ are built on the sender and receiver ends. The Gateways built for the esMD project follow the set of health information exchange standards, services and policies that the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has adopted. More information on the Exchange can be found by clicking the "eHealth Exchange" link below.
CMS' esMD Gateway
CMS esMD Gateway is built using the open source CONNECT software. This solution enables secure exchange of electronic health information adhering to various Health Information Technology (HIT) interoperability standards. Currently the Gateway securely receives the electronic medical documents submitted by various Health Information Handlers (HIHs) on behalf of the Providers. The CMS esMD Gateway went live on September 15, 2011!
More information about CONNECT software can be found by clicking the “CONNECT” link below.
Providers' Gateways
Any provider that wants to electronically submit medical documentation to a CMS Review Contractor must either 1) build a gateway, or 2) procure gateway services from the Health Information Handler (HIH) of their choice. For more information on which HIHs are currently participating in the CMS esMD program, click the link at the left called "Which HIHs Offer esMD Gateway Services to Providers?"
