HUD Housing Programs

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has developed a “Renter’s Kit” you can use to help your clients who are homeless find Federal housing assistance through programs such as Public Housing and the Housing Choice Voucher program. The “Renter’s Kit” can be accessed by visiting www.hud.gov/renting/index.cfm.

Public Housing
The Public Housing Program can provide your clients with decent and safe rental housing. This program is managed by local housing agencies. For more information on this program and eligibility and application information, visit www.hud.gov/renting/phprog.cfm.

Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8)
Managed locally by a public housing agency, the Housing Choice Voucher program (which includes the Section 8 certificate and voucher programs) can help your clients afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. If your client participates in this program, he/she is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. For more information on this program and to find the public housing agency in your area, visit www.hud.gov/offices/pih/programs/hcv/index.cfm.
