Job Corps
Job Corps is a comprehensive, primarily residential education and job training program for at-risk youth ages 16-24. Job Corps employs a holistic career development service system which integrates the teaching of academic, vocational, employability skills and social competencies through a combination of classroom, practical learning experiences, and counseling to prepare youth for stable, long-term, high-paying jobs. There are currently 118 Job Corps campuses located throughout the United States, each offering educational training and a variety of vocational training programs.

Your client may be eligible for Job Corps, if he/she is:

  • Between age 16 and 24
  • Economically disadvantaged
  • Drug-free
  • Either a U.S. citizen or a legal resident

If your client is eligible, then he/she may receive:

  • Basic provisions such as free housing and meals, medical care, transportation, clothing allowance, and additional funds
  • Educational training to help earn a high school diploma or a GED
  • Job training, including internships and projects with businesses

Youth Activities Program
The Youth Activities Program is a comprehensive training program designed to enhance youth education, encourage school completion through alternative educational programs, and provide exposure to the world of work through apprenticeships and career exploration classes.

Your client may be eligible if he/she:

  • Is age 14-21
  • Has low income
  • Has a barrier to employment

The Youth Activities Program may be particularly useful for your client who:

  • Is homeless, a runaway, or a foster child
  • Is deficient in basic skills
  • Is a school dropout
  • Is a parent or parenting
  • Has been incarcerated
  • Is disabled

Vocational Rehabilitation
The Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program, described in the "Services for Adults" section, also provides services to youth. While there are no specific age requirements set for use of VR services, individuals must be eligible to receive services.

Adult Education
Adult Education services are available to your clients who are age 16 or older. For more information on Adult Education, visit the Services for Adults section of FirstStep.

Unemployment Insurance
Unemployment insurance benefits are also available to youth who were working and become unemployed through no fault of their own. For more information on Unemployment Insurance, visit the Services for Adults section of FirstStep.
