Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

If Your Client is an Immigrant

If your client is an immigrant, in order to be eligible to receive SSI benefits, he/she may need to provide the following information:

  • Passport or naturalization certificate
  • An unexpired Form I-94 or I-551 from the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or an order from an immigration judge withholding deportation or granting asylum
  • U.S. military discharge papers (DD-214) showing honorable discharge that is not based on non-citizen status

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has a new process for non-citizens to apply for Social Security number (SSN) cards as part of the immigration process. Now, people age 18 and older applying for immigrant visas with the U.S. Department of State can also apply for SSN cards at the same time.
