NCVHS Standards Subcommittee Panel Focuses on a Successful ICD-10 Transition

Last month, ICD-10 was a featured topic at a meeting of the Standards Subcommittee of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS). Successful Results from CMS ICD-10 Acknowledgement Testing Week

This past March, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) conducted a successful ICD-10 testing week. Testers submitted more than 127,000 claims with ICD-10 codes to the Medicare Fee-for-service (FFS) claims systems and received electronic acknowledgements confirming that their claims were accepted. HPID:  What’s it all about?

According to Aristotle, knowing oneself is the beginning of all wisdom.  
At the risk of sounding poetic, I suggest that the e-Health initiative labeled the Unique Health Plan Identifier (HPID) may be an exercise in knowing what a thing is before progress can be made.  In the case of the HPID, the thing that we have to identify is the category of entities that are considered “HIPAA covered” health plans.  After nearly 20 years of HIPAA, we do not have a good sense of what the universe of HIPAA covered health plans is.  Through the HPID, we will come to know that universe. Medicaid EHR Incentive Program: Making Meaningful Use Work for Pediatricians

Health IT Week: Maine Hospitals Achieve Milestone for HIE Connectivity

Great news from Maine—it’s one of the first states to achieve full connectivity between hospitals utilizing technology to support interoperable health information exchange. Not long ago, a study in Health Affairs found that the average physician spends a cumulative total of 3 weeks a year on billing and insurance related tasks.  This means that American doctors are spending 3 weeks a year on the phone with insurance companies or poring over accounts instead of providing health care to patients.  If we want to move health care in this country toward better care, better population health, and lower costs, decreasing the administrative cost of a physician of doing business will be an essential element.
