Data Alert: A number of users have questioned the values found in the Error Indicator column of the Physician Supplier Procedure Summary (PSPS) 2010 file. It was discovered in the source system that this column was always populated with a "4" during a period of approximately 6 months in 2011, when 2010 claims were still being processed. This anomaly caused an increased number of records in the 2010 PSPS file based on how the file is aggregated. However, the data in this file matches source system data, and columns other than the Error Indicator column can be used for analysis. The Error Code column in the source system is used as referential integrity check, essentially to mark when a value that was on the claim was not in a database reference table. The Error Code column does not have any bearing on whether a claim was paid, denied, etc. We are recommending that this column be dropped from future PSPS releases as it does not appear to have any value from a business or analytical perspective. File Description: This file is a 100% summary of all Part B Carrier and DMERC Claims processed through the Common Working File and stored in the National Claims History Repository. The file is arrayed by carrier, pricing locality, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding (HCPC), modifier 1, modifier 2, specialty, type of service and place of service. The summarized fields are total submitted services and charges, total allowed services and charges, total denied services and charges, and total payment amounts. This file is produced annually and is usually available in July. This file is one CD.
