On May 21, 2013, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that the Commonwealth of Virginia will partner with CMS to test a new model for providing Medicare-Medicaid enrollees with a more coordinated, person-centered care experience.

Under the demonstration, also called "Commonwealth Coordinated Care," Virginia and CMS will contract with Medicare-Medicaid plans to coordinate the delivery of and be accountable for covered Medicare and Medicaid services for participating Medicare-Medicaid enrollees. 

Key Dates

May 21, 2013 - CMS and Virginia sign MOU

December 4, 2013 - CMS, Virginia, and participating plans execute three-way contract

April 1, 2014 - Start of opt-in enrollment

July 1, 2014 - Start of passive enrollment

April 14, 2016 - CMS, Virginia, and participating plans execute updated three-way contract

May 4, 2017 - Amendment to the Virginia three-way contract executed

December 31, 2017 - Demonstration ends
