End-Stage Renal Disease QIP
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Quality Incentive Program (QIP)
What’s the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Quality Incentive Program (QIP)?
The ESRD QIP rewards outpatient dialysis or ESRD facilities treating patients with ESRD with incentive payments for the quality of care they give to people with Medicare. The program also reduces payments to ESRD facilities that don’t meet or exceed certain performance standards.
Why’s the ESRD QIP important?
The ERSD QIP promotes better clinical outcomes for people with ESRD and makes their care experience better during dialysis treatment.
How does the ESRD QIP work?
We pay participating outpatient dialysis facilities for their services based on the quality of care, not just quantity of the services they provide in a given performance period.
What measures will be used in the ESRD QIP?
The foundation, principles, and mechanisms that guide the ESRD QIP stay the same over time, but the program’s specific quality measures, standards, weights, and formulas will change from year to year. Two examples of the program’s quality measures include:
- Measures on anemia management that reflect the labeling approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for administration of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs)
- Measures on hemodialysis adequacy
You can find the ESRD QIP scores for outpatient dialysis facilities at Dialysis Facility Compare.
