General Questions about Updating Information on Physician Compare

How can a clinician or group be added to Physician Compare?

For clinicians to be listed on Physician Compare, they must:

  • Be in approved status in Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS)
  • Have a valid practice location address or reassign their benefits to a group’s TIN
  • Have at least one specialty noted in PECOS
  • Have submitted a Medicare Fee-for-Service claim or be newly enrolled in PECOS within the last six months

For groups to be listed on Physician Compare, they must:

  • Be in approved status in PECOS
  • Have a valid practice location address
  • Have submitted a Medicare Fee-for-Service claim or be newly enrolled in PECOS within the last six months
  • Have a legal business name
  • Have at least two active Medicare clinicians reassign their benefits to the group’s TIN

If you believe your PECOS enrollment information and billing practices are correct but are still not listed on Physician Compare, please email the Physician Compare support team with your name and NPI. We will investigate the issue further.

How often is Physician Compare updated?

At this time, Physician Compare pulls an updated set of data from PECOS and claims twice per month. However, edits made in PECOS must be verified which can take two to four months. Once PECOS data is processed, the change will be reflected on Physician Compare.

Since information on Physician Compare comes from PECOS, it is important that clinicians and groups keep their information current in the PECOS system. Accurate PECOS information helps ensure clinicians and groups are correctly listed on the website.

How do I remove personal contact information from Physician Compare?

If your personal information is displaying on the website such as phone numbers or addresses, send the correct contact information to the Physician Compare support team so we can make a manual edit to your profile page. The manual edit quickly removes this information from the website; however, the manual edits remain in effect for six months only. Therefore, you also need to update this information via PECOS to ensure your personal information will not repopulate in the future. We recommend you make the update as soon as possible.

I am an individual clinician.

How do I update my name, education, phone number, or gender?

Individual clinicians can update their first and last name, gender, education, and group affiliation via PECOS.

How do I update my address?

If an Individual clinician’s address is not displaying correctly, the first step is to check PECOS to make sure all of the available practice location addresses are correctly listed.

  • In PECOS, you can select a “primary” and “secondary” practice location if you reassign your benefits to a group. You can pick from the list of approved PECOS addresses that are associated with the group you reassign your benefits to. If you mark any addresses as “primary” and/or “secondary” in PECOS, these will be the practice locations listed on your Physician Compare profile page.
  • If PECOS is up-to-date, you should also make sure that you’re including the service location on your Medicare claims and that you’re billing to the correct service location address. If no “primary” or “secondary” location is selected, then Physician Compare will only display the PECOS practice locations that match the ZIP code included on Medicare claims submitted in the previous six months. On the CMS-1500 claims form, this is Box 32, which is labeled “Service Facility Location Information”. If no practice locations match your claims zip codes, then Physician Compare will display the practice locations that match the carrier number on at least one claim filed under your NPI in the last six months.
  • If you are newly enrolled in Medicare, practice locations are exempt from the claims verification process for the first six months. These practice locations will be automatically included on Physician Compare. After six months, claims information will be used to determine which practice locations to display on your profile, if no “primary” or “secondary” location is selected in PECOS.

How do I update my group affiliation?

Your group affiliation on Physician Compare is determined by how you reassign your benefits in PECOS. You can add, remove, or change the reassignment of your benefits via PECOS.

How do I update my residency, board certification, or hospital affiliation?

Board certification is derived from certification and accrediting organizations such as the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Board of Optometry, and the American Board of Wound Medicine and Surgery. Hospital affiliation is derived from claims data.

If your residency, board certification, or hospital affiliation is incorrect on the website, email the Physician Compare support team to update this information. Please include your full name and NPI number when you contact us.

How do I update my specialty?

Your primary and secondary specialty can by updated via PECOS. To add a new specialty, you must submit a new paper 855i Medicare Enrollment Form to update your Medicare enrollment, or update your Medicare enrollment information in web-based PECOS.

How do I update my Medicare participation status?

Medicare participation status is updated via PECOS. It can only be updated during the open enrollment period, which is generally from mid-November through December 31. Contact your Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC)/carrier to get the exact dates the participation agreement will be accepted, and to learn where to send the agreement. To make this change via paper, clinicians must complete the Form CMS-460 and submit it to their MAC/carrier. For contact information, see the Medicare Fee-for-Service Provider Enrollment Contact List (PDF).

How do I update the address for clinicians affiliated with my group?

For groups, there are several reasons why address information may display incorrectly on Physician Compare.

  • When clinicians are part of a group, they reassign their benefits to the group. Therefore, the address information is pulled from the group’s PECOS enrollment, not the individual’s enrollment. If the group’s enrollment is incorrect or missing addresses, then it will be incorrect on the affiliated clinicians’ profile pages. In this case, we recommend that you verify that the group and individual enrollments in PECOS are correct.
  • If a group’s clinicians only list one service facility location, such as an administrative building, on their claims, then this location will display for the affiliated clinicians. CMS uses Medicare fee-for-service claims data to verify the information in PECOS, so that only those practice location addresses that a professional enters as a service facility location on claims are included on the website. We recommend checking that all clinicians are entering the actual locations where they are providing services on their Medicare claims. Once their claims are corrected, their address information will automatically update on the Physician Compare website in two to four months.

If you have checked PECOS and claims, or if you are a large group and not sure where to start, contact the Physician Compare support team at PhysicianCompare-Helpdesk@AcumenLLC.com and we will help identify the best next steps.

How do I add or remove an affiliated clinician?

To remove the affiliation, a group representative or clinician can terminate this reassignment relationship in PECOS. To be listed as an affiliated clinician under your group profile page on Physician Compare, a clinician must reassign his/her benefits to your group’s TIN and actively bill under that TIN.

How do groups ensure their “Doing Business As” (DBA) name display on Physician Compare?

A group is required to have a legal business name entered in PECOS to be included on Physician Compare. If a group has a DBA name listed in PECOS and would prefer to have this name listed on Physician Compare, they can send this information to the Physician Compare support team to request a manual edit.
