Enrolling Only to Order or Refer Supplies & Services
Most physicians or other eligible health care professionals or suppliers enroll in the Medicare Program for payment of covered services they provide to Medicare patients. But Medicare lets some physicians or other eligible health care professionals enroll for the sole purpose of ordering or referring items or services for Medicare patients.
These physicians or other eligible health care professionals don’t and won’t send claims to a Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) for the services they furnish.
Those who want to enroll in Medicare solely for the purpose of ordering and referring include:
- Department of Defense (DOD) or TRICARE employees
- Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employees
- Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Rural Health Clinic (RHC), or Critical Access Hospital (CAH) employees
- Indian Health Service (IHS) or tribal organization employees
- Licensed residents in an approved medical residency program defined in 42 CFR 413.75(b)
- Licensed retired physicians
- Pediatricians
- Public Health Service (PHS) employees
