Limitations on Ordering or Referring Supplies & Services

Medicare denies claims as non-covered services when they’re submitted by an ordering or referring physician or health care professional who isn’t authorized by statute and regulation.

Important limitations include:

• Chiropractors aren’t eligible to order or refer supplies or services for Medicare patients.
• Only a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.), or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) can order or refer Home Health Agency (HHA) services. This applies to physicians billing Care Plan Oversight (CPO) services with code G0181.
• Only an M.D. or a D.O. can order portable x-ray services.
