Puerto Rico Hospitals
CMS is renaming the EHR Incentive Programs to the Promoting Interoperability (PI) Programs to continue the agency’s focus on improving patients’ access to health information and reducing the time and cost required of providers to comply with the programs’ requirements. CMS is also in the process of finalizing updates to the programs through rulemaking. For more information, visit the landing page where CMS will publish updates and additional resources as soon as they are available.
For payment year 2017, the reporting period for Eligible Hospitals and CAHs in Puerto Rico is 14 consecutive days within the 2017 calendar year.
Section 602 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2016 added subsection (d) hospitals in Puerto Rico as eligible hospitals under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program and extended the participation timeline for these hospitals. This enables these hospitals to not only receive Medicare EHR Incentive payments but also be subject to the Medicare negative payment adjustments. These hospitals may begin participation for EHR reporting periods in 2016. They must be successfully demonstrating meaningful use by 2020 in order to avoid a negative payment adjustment in 2022. These hospitals could earn up to four consecutive years of Medicare EHR Incentive payments.
Registration and attestation for eligible hospitals in Puerto Rico will open on October 3, 2016 for reporting periods in calendar year 2016. Eligible hospitals in Puerto Rico may use this step-by-step guide to register or modify an existing registration for the EHR Incentive Programs. In 2016, these hospitals must attest to the Modified Stage 2 objectives and measures. For Modified Stage 2 objectives and measures, click here.
