View Public Comments for Gender Dysphoria and Gender Reassignment Surgery (CAG-00446N)

Erickson, Emily
I strongly recommend that all gender reassignment surgeries be covered under Medicare. Persons who suffer from Gender Dysphoria have many different treatment options including hormonal therapies, therapy, and gender reassignment surgeries. For many people suffering from Gender Dysphoria hormone therapy is enough to reach their gender goals, while others which to completely transform themselves. For the small percentage of people insured under Medicare who wish to receive a Gender Reassignment Surgery to treat and psychologically heal their Gender Dysphoria they should receive full coverage. A Gender Reassignment Surgery increases morale, well-being, mental health, and confidence in people suffering from Gender Dysphoria and decreases suicidal thoughts and actions. One would think that Medicare would approve of a treatment to reduce suicide rates in applicable patients and increase their well-being? Gender Reassignment Surgeries are only sought after by applicable persons who have made long, hard, and thoughtful decisions regarding their treatment. For them, they have decided along with friends, family, coworkers, and medical professionals that this is the best treatment for their Gender Dysphoria. Medicare is not in a position to deny individuals necessary care for needing individuals no matter their gender, sexuality, race, class, ethnicity, or any other category. Gender Reassignment Surgeries should not be the exception. Please choose to make Gender Reassignment Surgeries covered under Medicare.
