Medical Nutrition Therapy Benefit for Diabetes & ESRD

CAG-00097N

Issue

Section 105 of BIPA created a new benefit, Medical Nutritional Therapy for beneficiaries with diabetes and renal disease. The general framework, who can perform the service, coordination with the Diabetes Self-Management Training benefit, and payment information is included in the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for the Physician Fee Schedule Regulation. In the interests of developing the benefit in an open forum, CMS is developing the duration and frequency coverage criteria in the NCD process. In addition, further consideration is being given to the coordination of the MNT and DSMT benefits. All other aspects of the process have been published in the Federal Register on November 1, 2001.
