Rural Community Hospital Demonstration
The Rural Community Hospital Demonstration, launched in 2004, tests cost-based reimbursement paid to small rural hospitals (with fewer than 51 beds) that do not qualify as Critical Access Hospitals for covered Medicare inpatient hospital services.
The RCH demonstration was initially authorized by section 410A of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 and has been extended by statute three times. The demonstration is limited to a maximum of 30 hospital participants at a time.
