Description

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for people with movement disorders, such as essential tremor, Parkinson's disease and dystonia. DBS involves implanting electrodes within certain areas of the brain; these electrodes produce electrical impulses that regulate abnormal impulses within the brain. The amount of stimulation is controlled by a pacemaker-like device placed under the skin in the chest and connects to the electrodes in the brain. Medicare will consider whether the initial placement of Deep Brain Stimulation is reasonable and necessary for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and Essential Tremor, under certain conditions.
