Health Information Handler
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continuously strives to improve the adoption of exchanging healthcare documentation electronically. As a part of these efforts, CMS has developed the CMS Health Information Handler (CMS HIH) to provide, at no cost, services and support to providers and other organizations interested in exchanging medical documentation such as portable document format (PDF) or extensible markup language (XML) documents through the CMS Electronic Submission of Medical Documentation (esMD). Using the CMS HIH will allow for the processing of all esMD lines of business such as Prior Authorization (PA) requests and Additional Document Requests (ADR) responses with the following benefits:
Hosted on CMS Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud
The CMS HIH is hosted in the CMS AWS environment, meeting all security and privacy requirements. There is no Information Technology (IT) expertise required from the user and functionality updates are automatic and align with the esMD quarterly releases.
Small or Large Users
The CMS HIH can serve any organization that wants to send medical documentation to CMS ranging from an individual provider or small entities who wish to send one-time or few monthly transactions to large organizations who wish to send hundreds of transactions in a month.
Easy Access
To utilize the CMS HIH, users simply need to enter into service agreements, perform testing, and obtain credentials with CMS HIH support every step of the way and throughout the transaction submission process.
