CMS Health Information Handler
Notice: CMS HIH Services to Conclude on September 14, 2025
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has decided not to continue the CMS Health Information Handler (CMS HIH) Management and Support project beyond September 14, 2025.
As a result, the CMS HIH solution and all associated services will be discontinued as of that date.
- For existing users: The project team will reach out to discuss potential alternative support options tailored to your needs. You may also contact the team directly at cmshih@cms.hhs.gov.
- For prospective users: CMS HIH is no longer accepting new users or onboarding requests. Information on other Health Information Handlers (HIHs) is available on the esMD web page under “Frequently Asked Questions”:
- For users interested in an API-based solution: The Provider Compliance Group Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (PCG-FHIR) is a no-cost, API-based option using the HL7 standard for electronic healthcare information exchange. More information is available here:
