Correction 3 to Data Specifications Version 1.30 (05/10/2005)

Documentation available with Correction #3 to Version 1.30 of the MDS 2.0 Data Specifications completely replaces all previous documentation for Version 1.30. 

All documentation relevant to Version 1.30 has been included with this Correction #3 posting. All documents with Correction #3 have been dated 05/06/2005, except two documents carried forward from Version 1.10 of the specifications. Those two documents are spdoc110.doc and spdoc110.pdf.

Implementation of Version 1.30

Version 1.30 of the MDS Data Specifications will go into effect on October 1, 2005. This new version adds a new Section W (Supplemental MDS Items) with 5 items. Section W is only in effect on assessments with assessment reference date (MDS Item A3a) on or after October 1, 2005, on discharge tracking forms with discharge date (MDS Item R4) on or after October 1, 2005. The new items are not in effect on any record with an earlier date, regardless of whether that record is an original submission, a modification of a prior record, or an inactivation of a prior record. No submission errors or warnings will occur for records with earlier dates.

Version 1.30 is being implemented early in the MDS State Systems to allow software vendors the flexibility of upgrading their systems to Version 1.30 before the required implementation date of October 1, 2005. At least 2 months before the October 1, 2005 implementation, the MDS State Systems will be revised to allow records conforming to Version 1.30 to be submitted without errors or warnings due to changes with Version 1.30.

Changes With Correction 3 to Version 1.30

Version 1.30 of the MDS Data Specifications adds a new MDS Section, Section W, Supplemental MDS Items, and modifies the specifications version code field (VCODE2) to allow a version code of 1.30 to be submitted. The major changes with Correction 3 to Version 1.30 are:

  • The date ranges for requiring completion of the influenza vaccine items (W2a and W2b) have been simplified from different date ranges for different types of records to a single standard date range of October 1 through June 30.
  • Completion of the pneumococcal vaccine items (W3a and W3b) is required on all assessments and discharges. Previously, these items were only required on assessments and discharges for residents 65 years and older.
  • An unable to determine (dash) response has been allowed on all vaccine items (W2a, W2b, W3a, W3b) and inter-item consistency requirements have been defined when a dash value is present.

  • h_dt130c3.pdf, the detailed data specifications for the MDS Header Record with Correction 3 to Version 1.30 (7 pages).
  • h_sm130c3.pdf, the abbreviated (summarized) data specifications for the MDS Header Record with Correction 3 to Version 1.30 (2 pages).
  • t_dt130c3.pdf, the detailed data specifications for the MDS Trailer Record with Correction 3 to Version 1.30 (1 page).
  • t_sm130c3.pdf, the abbreviated (summarized) data specifications for the MDS Trailer Record with Correction 3 to Version 1.30 (1 page).
  • mds_d130.xls, a Microsoft Excel worksheet (97-2000 & 5.0/95 version) with abbreviated Version 1.30 (Correction 3) field by field layout information for all fields in the Data Record Layout.

The second is a compressed ZIP file containing the Microsoft Access database named MDS130c3.mdb, the database used to generate the detailed and abbreviated data specifications for the Header, Data and Trailer records for Correction 3 to Version 1.30.
