Action Plan

You may be protected from unexpected medical bills if you use Medicare.
Medicare is offered through the Traditional (or Original) Medicare Fee-for-Service Program and through Medicare health plans (like Medicare Advantage).
Contact Medicare if you have billing questions. If you are enrolled in a Medicare health plan, you should also contact your plan.

Learn about your billing protections under Medicare.

Medicare doesn't pay for all medical items or services.

If your provider thinks the Medicare Fee-for-Service program (also called Original Medicare or Traditional Medicare) won't pay, they your provider may give you a written notice to let you know. This "Advance Beneficiary Notice of Non-Coverage" gives cost estimates and reasons why Medicare might not pay.

If you are in a Medicare health plan, you can ask your plan to decide if a service is covered for you and your out-of-pocket costs before you get the service.  Contact your plan for details on how to ask for a pre-service determination and your costs for covered services.
