Health Status Monitoring

Round 2021 of the Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, & Supplies (DMEPOS) Competitive Bidding Program (CBP) began on January 1, 2021, and will extend through December 31, 2023.  Round 2021 includes two product categories: Off-the-Shelf (OTS) Back Braces and OTS Knee Braces.

Starting January 1, 2024, there will be a temporary gap in the DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Program. However, to protect the interest and safety of Medicare beneficiaries, CMS continues to conduct real-time claims analysis to monitor the health status for groups of Medicare beneficiaries for all product categories that have been included, and are currently included, in the DMEPOS CBP in competitive bidding areas (CBAs) and non-CBAs. For more information on Round 2021, please visit the Competitive Bidding Implementation Contractor (CBIC) website. Additional information on the gap period can be found in the Temporary Gap Period (PDF) fact sheet.

Health status results are posted below on this page. Each file includes a written summary of results and graphical displays of key indicators reflective of the health status of beneficiaries and their access to DMEPOS CBP items and services. The data is derived from claims for Medicare populations in each CBA and a corresponding "comparator" region that is similar to the CBA. CMS is now issuing semi-annual updates beginning with the updates for Q1 2021.
