The Medicare Ranking for all Short-Stay Hospitals by Discharges reports provides ranked lists of principal diagnostic categories (DRGs) based on the number of Medicare-covered discharges from short-stay (acute care) hospitals for a given fiscal year. These reports show which conditions or procedures account for the most hospital discharges among Medicare beneficiaries and how those rankings change from one year to the next. They help illustrate patterns in hospital utilization, highlight common reasons Medicare patients are admitted and discharged, and support analysis of trends in inpatient hospital care over time.
